"Roaring On" is the moment in The Great Gatsby: A New Musical when the party takes over the story. Lena brought the Broadway cast recording to ChangeLyric with a brief that matched the event: personalized lyrics for Steve's 60th birthday, a 1920s speakeasy Gatsby party, with new vocals that still sound like the original artists.
What Changed
The narrator's "I" became a collective "we." Where the original narrator arrives in New York from Minnesota, the new version has the family arriving in their own city after leaving their country home. Every reference moves with them: "All of New York City" became "All of Gold Coast City," and "Manhattan's come undone" became "Brisbane's come undone."
Steve steps into the Gatsby role. "The Great War has been won" became "The Great Kylie has been won," and "The Bacchanalia has begun" became "Beau Steve's 60th has begun." The chorus question "Where's the party and can you take me there?" is now "Where's Steve's party and can you take us there?" so the whole hook of the song points at the guest of honor.
The deep cuts are what make guests lean in. The mysterious invitation still arrives nearly word for word, but the signature now reads "Yours, K & S Alias Gatsby."
The Long Island cottage renting for 80 bucks a month became a far more Australian donga on the grounds of a mansion, still 80 bucks a month. Even the best man reaching across the water now has a Queensland river to reach across.

Original LyricsI left my home in Minnesota
To escape a kind of restlessness
I couldn't shake
After the war
And when I stepped off of the train
At Pennsylvania Station
I felt that restlessness even more
All of New York City
Wanted what was coming next
Everyone was looking for
What I was looking for
Tonight, let's misbehave
And take what happens
To the grave
No matter what you crave
The city's reignited
The Great War has been won
The Bacchanalia has begun
Manhattan's come undone
And everyone's invited
Where's the party and can you take me there?
And when the party's over
Can you find another party somewhere?
We live for today
We pay off the cops
And today is never over if the party never stops
Where's the party and can you take me there?
And when the party's over
Can you find another party somewhere?
We live for today
We pay off the cops
And when you think the party stops
The party's roaring on
The party's roaring on
Oh, we beat on, and on
And on, and on
And on, and on, and on
The practical thing was to find rooms in Manhattan
Turns out
Manhattan's expensive!
So when I heard of a cottage
On the grounds of a Long Island Mansion
For 80 bucks a month
I jumped on it!
A rumor's going round
About a mansion on the Sound
The city's found another
John Jacob Astor
He opens up his place
Then disappears without a trace
His parties set the pace
Then he takes it faster!
Where's the party and can you take me there?
And when the party's over
Can you find another party somewhere?
We live for today
We pay off the cops
And when you think the party stops
The party's roaring on
The party's roaring on
Oh, we beat on, and on
And on, and on
And on, and on, and on
One evening, I went down to the shoreline
Here is what I'll never forget
There was my neighbor
Standing in silhouette
He was reaching 'cross the water
His arms stretched to the sky
And then he was gone
And I was left to wonder why
I turned back to my cottage
What was he reaching for?
Then a letter from my neighbor
Fell to the floor
"The honor would be entirely mine
If you would attend my next little party
Yours, Jay Gatsby"
(Oh)
The very first time (Oh oh oh oh)
I saw Gatsby's name (Oh oh oh!)
If only I knew then
That I would never be the same
(Where's the party and can you take me there?)
He hypnotised the city (Yeah)
We were drawn to him like moths to a flame (Take me there)
Was there some other way (Some other way)
This all could've gone (This all could've gone)
Before we crossed the Rubicon? (Whoo!)
(The party's roaring on)
He had the world at his feet
(The party's roaring on)
Oh, he made the summer beat
(Oh, we beat) On, and on
And on (And on)
(And on, and on, and on)
(And on)
The party's roaring on (The party's roaring on)
The party's roaring on (The party's roaring on, and on)
(Oh we beat on, and on)
(And on, and on)
And on! (And on)
And on! (And on, and on)
And on!
And on! (And on!)
Custom LyricsWe left our home in the country
To escape a kind of restlessness
We couldn't shake
Before the Plandemic
And when we stepped off of the train
To Riversone Crossing Station
We felt that fencelessness even more

Wanted what was coming next

Tonight, let's misbehave
And take what happens

How We Made It
Jared picked the job up the day it was assigned and delivered the first full version less than a week after payment, as a complete mix plus separate vocal and instrumental files. The feedback came back fast and specific. Lena sent a line-by-line list, plus a voice recording from Australia so we could hear exactly how the local names should sound.
That recording drove the first revision. The town in the opening line needed its stress on the final syllable, and Brisbane had to be sung as "BRIZ-buhn" rather than the clipped reading of the first pass. Smaller wording notes went into the same round, from switching "Before" to "After" in the opening verse to tightening the invitation's sign-off.
One requested change would not sit cleanly: an extra "Steve's" buried in the busy final chorus, where too much vocal activity was packed into the same bars. We said so plainly rather than forcing a swap that would sound worse. Lena's next round of notes added the "fencelessness" pun in the opening verse and put the best man on jet skis instead of reaching across the river, and the third version was accepted within hours of delivery.
Why It Works
The source song does half the job. "Roaring On" is already about a crowd that refuses to let a party end, which is the exact energy a speakeasy themed 60th is going for. Once Steve is the mysterious host, the song's satire becomes a toast, and the whole room catches it because the original lines are still recognizable underneath.
The other half is the vocal match. Because the new lines were produced to sit inside the cast recording's performance instead of replacing it with a generic voice, the 1920s swing of the arrangement survives every word change.
Guests notice instantly when a themed party song feels even slightly off. This one sounds like the record they know, just with their own people in it.
